Sock for a Giant

I just can’t seem to figure out this gallery thing on WordPress. And I’m too lazy to load pictures one by one into each post, so please bear with me on this. Kay?

See the sock up top? That’s the latest spring fever project.  I’m doing a toe-up version of the Simply Lovely Lace Socks by Karen Baumer from IK  Spring 2006 using Lotus Yarns’ Love My Way. Seriously in love with all things Melanie and Lotus Knits and Lotus Yarns. (Yes that was a shameless plug but I don’t care because her colors are incredible. Go there now.)  Things were going swimmingly. I knit up the instep to the point where I thought I’d start the heel. I used David’s Toe Up Sock Cookbook for the heel, and after it was done, the sock was freakin’ Huge! With a capital H! That’s what those lovely pictures are from. Those heels added four inches to the length of the socks. Yikes! I’m used to two-and-a-half or three inchees for the heels, but I’ve never come across four. I could have messed up the pattern or the numbers, but after looking at it over and over, I just couldn’t find my mistake. Time to move on.

I also knew it would be hard to convince any men I knew to wear those lavender lacy socks, and selfish person that I am, I really want these for myself. So I frogged back, and inserted the heel from Mouse’s Toe Up Socks.  I think I may have found my go-to toe-up heel flap heels from now on! Heel love. I’ll save my review of the different toe up heel flaps for another post. I moved up the leg, and decided that these purdy socks needed some extra girliness, so I went with a picot edge, my first for socks I’ll have you know.  I’m on the second sock now, just past the toes with quite a bit to go.

I also decided that I needed to crank out the February Lady Sweater so it could be done doner and donest. These pictures really show the color difference between the skeins that I used, much more so I can see when I hold it up in the sunlight. I’m a bit bummed about it, but I’m determined to push on and finish up this bad boy. I’m on the cuff of the first sleeve, so perhaps I’ll have this done by March.

That’s all I’m working on right now, although I’m really looking forward to my next project or two. It’s spring, so of course I have to knit a little short sleeve sweater or shrug thing. I think this is my annual ritual.  I’ve decided to start the  Whisper Cardigan by Hannah Fettig from IK Spring 2009 and after turning my stash, I had to buy some Malabrigo Lace for it in a nice light blue. Thanks for predicting that, Annette.  For how much I love Malabrigo, I don’t knit with it nearly enough. Madgik has become quite the convert, and I think I need to have some of her koolaid. I’ll also try to whip out a quick shrug, the Anthropologie-Inspired Capelet by Julia Allen, with some cotton in the stash for more spring wearing, or maybe the Shetland Shorty by Gudrun Johnston with some sock yarn in the stash. Quick. Me. heh heh. Go ahead and laugh.
